Q. What does tambour mean?
A. Well, it is defined by as: Furniture - a flexible shutter used as a desk top or in place of a door, composed of a number of closely set wood strips attached to a piece of cloth, the whole sliding in grooves along the sides or at the top and bottom. If you use aluminum in place of the “wood strips” that sums it up quite well.
Q. What is the maximum width for Cabinet Tambour Shutter?
A. Depending on the model, it could go as wide as 4 feet.
Q. What is the maximum height?
A. There is no standard height. You should always keep in mind this type of door has no counterbalance and therefore total weight is an issue and it can come down fast if the user does not control it.
Q. Can Cabinet Tambour Shutters be motor operated?
A. Never. If you do need a motorized shutter you should look at the Mini Roll-Up line.
Q. Is there any other method of operating a CTS besides manual push up?
A. No. CTS models are very basic and simple.
Q. What is the headroom requirement?
A. None. Actually the tambour requires a 1 to 5 inch radius, depending on model (see details). Mini Roll-Ups can fit into a space as small as 6 inches.
Q. Do CTS models come with track or guides?
A. No. The cabinetmaker will build in a guide using the cabinet material within the cabinet itself.
Q. Do all CTS models require side room?
A. Yes. The cabinet groove for the CTS-M is 15/32 x 7/8 inch. All other models require a groove of 1/2 x 3/4 inch.
Q. How small can I make the slot in the ceiling for the curtain to drop down from? Seems 2" to 3" should do?
A. You will always need a minimum slot of 6 inches. On curtains over 24 feet we require 7 feet.
Q. Should CST’s have a cabinet access panel?
A. It would make installation and removal much easier. They are usually located on the back of the cabinet.
Q What kind of locking devices secure the CTS?
A. Cabinet Tambour Shutters have two types of bottom bar locking each working with a keyed cylinder. One is a hook bolt lock activated to engage into a separate extrusion called a lock channel or into a recessed lock plate. The other type has slide throw knobs that push a rod into the sides of the cabinet that secure the shutter.
Q. Can the locks be master keyed?
A. Yes. We can use Best cylinders and other brands that are easily substituted in place of the factory mortise cylinder for an additional charge.
